7:04 pm - Oh football, how I missed you
So the first preseason game of the '09 football season was last night. I watched most of it, but I guess I came in too late and missed this (the best angle is the one from the back, at the end of the clip):

LOL WTF IS THIS SHIT? I love trick plays. Also day-yum, that kid is fast.

11:10 pm - I haven't posted in forever...
Sorry for my recent LJ absence ^^; There's just been so much going on. I've still got a ton to do in terms of applying for jobs and stuff. Blegh.

In any case, I'm a graduate and done with school now :D Which means the boring part of my life has officially begun.

But what I actually want to do right now is squee XD

Movies:
To boldy split infinitives where no one has before. )

Night at the Smithsonian! )

And lastly, we have some photos I’ve been meaning to post for like a month now ^^;

Adventures with Amigurumi! )

So anyway that’s what I’ve been up to 8D

EDIT: One more quick link, because I love schadefreude and T.O. is a grade-A douchebag.

5:43 pm - Happy Easter!
Came home for the weekend, got a haircut, did some shopping, but mostly I messed about on the internets :3

Found a hilarious Death Note comic while cruising TV Tropes XD;; Light could probably have won if he had taken this approach, I bet.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I hope this book does well so we can look forward to The Ninjas of Wuthering Heights or Emma vs. Aliens. I kind of want to read it, but at the same time I am a little afraid.

Lastly, and most cool:

The Washington Post just published the winners of their 3rd annual Peeps diorama contest. A lot of them are DC-themed, which makes me happy. My personal favorites are 4, 15, 17, 19, 30 (GODDAMN TOURISTS), and 37. My mother's co-worker made 28, which is also awesome.

1:53 am - WHY SO MUCH FAIL, FOX?
Fox News vs. 4chan

It's so funny when they clearly have no idea what they're talking about XD

While I'm at it, Fox News vs. Anonymous is hilarious too, if you haven't seen it already. It's from a year or two ago.

6:34 pm - :(
I didn't get into JET. I was kind of expecting it with how badly my interview went a few months ago. There's always next year, I suppose, but it would have been much more convenient to get in this year. My current roommate's going to be studying in Japan next year, so it would have been cool to meet up every once in a while and hang out.

Now I need to figure out for real what I'm going to do next year :/

Today is a Campus Open House day, which means we get overrun by high schoolers thinking about coming here. The Language House is also trying to impress prospective students, and it was apparently our apartment's turn to host the visitors and their parents. In order to show them authentically how we live everyday we spent a big chunk of yesterday making the apartment cleaner than it's been all year.

Also campus is super crowded, which is annoying >:(

"Defenestrate" is my new favorite word. It's even funnier when you know the root (Everything I Need to Know About Latin I Learned from Dinosaurs 8D )

Went to the Maryland women's basketball game today, which they of course won because they're made of awesome. I like sporting events. It's nice to have a venue where you're allowed to scream your head off and no one cares. Where screaming your head off is encouraged, even.

In any case, we're in the Sweet Sixteen, baby! Also Duke apparently lost their game, which is always good.

Blargh, sorry if I'm a bit incoherent x.x I barely slept at all last night and I've spent the last few hours rotting my brain on FFR and F_W ^^;

11:17 pm - Hmph
Here is what I missed last week because I was too busy being lazy:
3/14 - Happy Pi Day! Also happy birthday Albert Einstein.
3/15 - BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH.
3/16 - Happy half-birthday to me X3
3/17 - KISS ME, I'M IRISH Also happy 16th birthday to my cousin (16??? I remember when she was born ;laskduyfiuasudhfk I'm old ._. )

I had some interesting links to share with the group, but then Firefox crapped out on me and I lost the tabs ._. I'm sure I could find them again, but it's much too late and I'm much too lazy.

Woman in the Dunes is pretty much the worst book ever. Not to say that the writing is bad, or anything, but it's just not about anything I want to read about. I have to read it for my Japanese lit class, which might have been great because it was also assigned for the lower level Japanese lit class I took two years ago, except I didn't actually read it for that class either. Also this is not the sort of class where you can fake it, unlike the other one.

Spring break was last week. I spent pretty much the whole time fending off my mother, watching sports with my dad, sleeping, and lounging about. It was the BEST THING EVER.

Also I finished watching Kiva, because I told myself I couldn't start watching Decade until I had ^^; (Thirty episodes and a movie in three days! I FAIL!) The ending was SO EPIC. I was laughing for like twenty minutes. Then I watched the last scene again and laughed for another ten. The movie was pretty fun, too (play "Count the Den-O references" when you watch it. I got five at least. "Ore? Sanjou" was my favorite XDD ) It reminded me why I liked Kamen Rider so much, and also made me a little nostalgic for Den-O. I went and watched clips from the Deka movie (Momo!Wataru and Ura!Yuuto will never not be funny) and the first half of the Imagin anime after that (I think I could feel my brain melting out my ears as I watched it. For some reason Ryuutaros and his elephant cracked me up. "Yay, it's the same size again!" probably because I was watching it at like 4 am). The third (!!) Den-O movie is coming out on DVD sometime next month, but I'm guessing Sato Takeru's not going to be in it much since he's kind of got better things to be doing now ^^;

Still haven't started Decade, though :/

I have tickets to the women's NCAA tournament game tomorrow XDDDD GO MARYLAND! TURTLE POWER!

5:19 pm - japanese lit asdf;'olods';ljk;io
Yukio Mishima is (probably rightly) known as one of the greatest post-war figures of Japanese literature. He was amazingly prolific and his novels were pretty much all well-received. Every Japanese lit class I've ever had has required at least one of his books.

This does not change the fact that the man was BUGFUCK INSANE and I don't want more glimpses into his psyche than I really need.

Also I'm not particularly inclined to think charitably towards him right now because I need to read all of After the Banquet by tomorrow.

2:01 pm - lots of articles probably no one cares about but me aka PALEONTOLOGY YAY!
ATTENTION, SEATTLE F-LISTERS! Go see this Lucy exhibit for me! ;______; That's so awesome that she's in the 'States... why did it have to be on the other coast? One of the biggest paleontological finds in the past century... We never get good traveling paleontology exhibits here >w<

Also, you guys remember how they found that mammoth in the San Diego construction site a couple weeks ago?

They recently dug down a little further in that same place and came across A WHALE. (story here)

Those people are never getting their construction site back XDDDD I am also trying my best to ignore the flaming ignorance of paleontology in the comments.

What a sweet gig for those paleontologists. Usually going to digs means going out to the desert and living in a tent for months. They get to go to their dig and then go home and sleep in their own beds at night!

Lastly, potentially among the biggest finds in human-origin paleontology in years was announced this week: Oldest Human Footprints With Modern Anatomy Found. So Homo erectus almost definitely had a modern human-like gait. No more of this shambling stooped caveman nonsense please, TV! (also shows without a doubt what most researchers have thought for years; that modern-like upright gate came BEFORE modern-like brain size.)

Going home soon! Sister's on spring break starting today, so we're going to spend the weekend playing Lego Star Wars until our brains fall out our ears. Whee! XDDDDDDDD ♥

Stegosaur discovered with unusually long neck. And another article from the Discovery Channel. Seems to make sense to me, since the front legs are so long it'd have to have a longer neck to reach the ground. Still cool, though 8DD

Also it mentions in the Discovery Channel link that Jack Horner (who is among my Paleontologist Heroes) has a new book coming out in March. I am only slightly embarrassed to admit I have it on pre-order ._.

Blarg, have to get ready for TWO tests tomorrow X____X Also rehearsal for showcase.

EDIT: Oh boy! I do so enjoy it when the homework for a class has nothing to do with what we're going over in lecture! Thanks so much, Phonology.

EDIT2: Dammit

7:55 pm - Sports and Science Fiction
HOW 'BOUT THEM TERPS!

I'm not really a basketball person, but even I watched the mens' game yesterday 8DDD Also the parents and I went to see the womens' game against Duke today, because one of the Duke starters went to Oakton and graduated in the same class as my sister. Sadly for her, the Maryland girls flattened them 8DDD

Also I am considering becoming a hockey fan now that football season is over, especially since the Capitals are the only DC team in ANY SPORT that's any good I am looking at you, Wizards

AND! Check out my new favorite science fiction story: Despoilers of the Golden Empire by Randall Garrett. Don't look at the pictures! You'll ruin it for yourself like I did XD;;

1:11 am - This post will sound better if you read it with a British accent
So a couple of days ago I thought I would have to make a post titled "RIP ShanPod" since it seemed my faithful companion of two and a half years had finally gone to join the choir invisible. If I hadn't been keeping it in the drawer waiting for the battery to give out it would have been pushing up the daisies. It was an ex-iPod.

But lo and behold, I plugged it in this morning to discover it had only been resting! Pining for the fjords! It appears to be working just as well as ever, which is a relief because I'd really like to avoid spending a ton of money on a new iPod. Even if the new models do have some quite beautiful plumage.

In other news, here is your paleontology story for the day: Nearly complete mammoth skeleton discovered in LA construction site.

I hope this post doesn't jinx The ShanPod's new found health.

9:59 pm - Adventures in Being a Nerd
My day:

Woke up with a start at 7:00, thinking I'd overslept (which is stupid because my first class today is at 1:00 in the afternoon). Immediately go back to sleep and wake up with alarm at 10:30. Finish essay for kanji class (and it was the best essay ever, and I don't care what Miura-sensei says when she grades it X] ), go get lunch from the co-op while studying for kanji quiz. Have to go run to the ATM because I forgot I didn't have any cash on me (the co-op doesn't take credit cards). Finish food, go to class. I think I passed the quiz. Go upstairs to hang out for an hour before my other class, in the meantime because I'm in a kanji mindset I do the homework for Wednesday. Go to second class, which lets out early. I head back to the dorm and chill for about half an hour, until I realize I can't find my student ID card D: I figure I must have dropped it out and about somewhere, and am glad I only went a few places today. I go back out to the room my first class was in and check around my desk; no dice. I head to the office across the hall, and shockingly someone turned it in. I was sure I was going to have to pay $15 to get a new one, and am so pleased that I decide to head back to the Union to get a celebratory snack from the co-op. Unfortunately the co-op has nothing of interest, but it is right next to the bookstore, which reminds me that still I need to get some books for my lit class. Go pick up my books ($39 argh DX and they didn't even have one of the ones I needed) and stumble across a copy of On the Origin of Species, which I keep meaning to read. This reminds me that I've been meaning to look for paleontology books in the Physical Sciences Library but have been putting it off because it's way the hell down in the Math/Science section of campus. It's still fairly early in the afternoon and the weather is great, so I figure what the hell and head down there.

I've never been to that library before, so after looking up some call numbers I have to ask the librarian to point me to the right section (or at least the right floor). I head up and wander through the stacks for a bit before I discover the paleontology section, of which one whole ceiling-to-floor shelf is entirely devoted to dinosaur books. IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING EVER :')

I start pulling off books that look interesting, before I know it I've got a stack of about eight or so. I pick them up (heavier than I thought they would be) and make my way over to one of the tables. Oh, and ever since I left the dorm I've been bopping away to all the new music I put on my iPod last night. Anyway, I proceed to bury myself in dinosaur nerdity.

After a while, I look up, and realize four things:
1. It's 7:00.
2. I'm starving.
3. I'm only halfway through my stack of books.
4. There's no one here but me.

It takes me another half-hour to pry myself away from the one I was in the middle of and go back downstairs (in that time some other people showed up to the study area, so I wasn't entirely alone in the library). I check one of the books out (about the dig in Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. Ghost Ranch is to dinosaur paleontology what King Tut's tomb is to Egyptology) and make notes about several of the others that I want to look at more later. After that I head home, stopping on the way to get food at the Union.

So I am happy X3 Also I know where that is now, so since it's not too far from where my Post-War Japanese Lit class is held I might go over after class some more, particularly days when that class bums me out (aka every day I have it).

Now I have Linguistics homework to do ):

Set up my JET interview just now. >w< I requested next next Wednesday in the morning, so if I've very lucky I'll be able to go to the interview and come back in time for my first class at 1:00. And if I'm not it won't kill me to miss that class once >.> It's my kanji class, so it's mostly self-study anyway.

I was going to complain about my Tuesday and Thursday schedules here, but I'm super tired right now so that might have to wait x.x I'm sure I'll have call to whine about them in the future.

I will leave you with my favorite news story of the day: Fossil of Largest Snake Ever Discovered in South America (CNN and BBC) They only found a vertebrae, but with snakes (unlike, say, dinosaurs) there are living animals you can compare with to calculate size and a known mathematical relation between size of vertebrae and total body size. So it was over 42 feet long and probably weighed 2,500 lbs, and at it's widest point would about come up to a person's hips. It probably ate crocodiles.

And it's name? Titanoboa. SO AWESOME.

This doesn't mean I'm in, but it does mean I passed Stage One and get to try in Stage Two. And if I pass Stage Two then I'm in.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH I AM SO RELIEVED. My apartment mate who also applied got an interview, too X3

Now I'm getting nervous about the interview itself, though ):
